Man United remains £1bn in debt after £63.5m stadium land purchase

Despite aggressive cost‑cutting by owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Manchester United’s debt remains above £1bn. The club has also spent £63.5m on land for its new stadium, a key part of its long‑term redevelopment plan.

Manchester United’s financial position has not improved dramatically, with the club’s overall debt still topping £1bn despite a series of cost‑cutting measures introduced by owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Ratcliffe has overseen a reduction in operating costs across the club, from wages to commercial expenses, in an effort to stabilise the balance sheet and reduce the debt burden.

At the same time, United has continued to invest in its future infrastructure, spending £63.5m to acquire land for the new stadium that will replace Old Trafford.

While the purchase of the land is a necessary step for the long‑term redevelopment plan, the cost adds to the club’s current liabilities and will be reflected in the financial statements for the coming years.

The club’s next focus will be the construction of the new stadium and the monetisation of its commercial assets, which are expected to help offset the debt over the long term and provide a new revenue stream for the club.
