Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology was introduced in the 2018‑19 season, and since then it has become a central feature of modern football. Despite its widespread use, the system has never included a live audio feed for fans in the stadium or at home.
The absence of live commentary from the VAR room means supporters must rely on the on‑field referee’s whistle or post‑match explanations to understand why a decision was made. From a fan’s perspective, hearing the discussion in real time could enhance engagement and trust in the officiating system. It would also allow supporters to see the deliberation that leads to a final decision, rather than just the outcome.
