Azpilicueta calls time on 20-year career, eyes new stage
César Azpilicueta has announced he will leave Chelsea after 20 years, citing a need for a new chapter in his life. The former captain, who led the club to multiple trophies, said it was time to move to a different stage of life.
César Azpilicueta confirmed that he will leave Chelsea at the end of the season, bringing his illustrious 20‑year playing career to a close. The former captain said it was time to move to a different stage of life and take a break from the demands of top‑flight football.
Azpilicueta joined Chelsea in 2003 and became a mainstay in the defence for two decades, making over 400 appearances for the club. He has been an integral part of every major trophy win in that period.
During his time at Stamford Bridge he captained the side to a Premier League title, a Champions League triumph, several FA Cups and League Cups, cementing his status as one of the club’s most respected leaders.
In his statement, Azpilicueta highlighted the physical and mental toll of a long career and expressed a desire to focus on other aspects of life outside of playing. He said the decision was made after careful consideration of his future.
While Azpilicueta has not yet announced his next role, his departure opens the door to potential coaching, punditry or other opportunities within football, or a chance to spend more time with family and pursue personal interests.
